Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Guess I will just have to listen to them all to know what they really played- 5-10-80 Boston Garden Post He' Gone Jam (really a caution jam- smokin)

Deadbase has no jam listed for this show. Deadlists.com just has it listed as "jam". At least the first 6 minutes of this is as close to being a caution jam as you can get without being called a caution jam. After 6 minutes you are dropped into the war zone- Apocalypse Now jam- Choppers and all...

Whatever you want to call it, it is remarkable and a truly fantastic accidental discovery. Do download the He's Gone it developes out of.

Liam,

It's about time that 1980 got the due it deserves. It's really a great year with lots of energetic playing. It actually reminds me of 1977 in a way. (as 1979 with Brent reminds me of 1976). This show was my find of the year; I couldn't believe the lack of exposure.

The Alabama is probably the best version that I've heard. Lazy Lightnin>Supplication is one of those Garcia speedy versions. The 1st set ends with a powerful China>Rider and then of course the Caution Jam, yes it's a real Caution Jam...who cares what deadbase says.

While you're in the vicinity 5-10-80 may be one of the best shows I've ever heard and 5-8-80 at the Glen is a great show. I can go on and on with many other shows in 1980...how about the whole week of 8/31 to 9/6. Perhaps their best week ever?

Good call Liam.

That 9/6/80 is a gorgeous show from start to finish. Love that one. Other good example of post He's Gone jam is my favorite: Cape Cod 10/27/79. The segue into The Other One is a work of art, with Phil dropping one of the better bombs to start TOO. On the same tour, 11/9/79 has a real pretty post He's Gone Gloria jam that sends chills up my spine. Amazing stuff all. Damn, I love this band.

11/24/79 is one of my top 10 shows from any era. The China/Rider opener I would put up against any other. Phil is upfront in the mix all the way and drives the train beautifully. Great Playin' in the second set. The Wharf Rat is also a gem. The whole Fall 79 tour as a whole is on of their better runs (coast to coast), one amazing show after another.
